He's always moaning about everything, seems to be the main reason he comes here.

For 5k (well this is "only" 4.3k) I would get this:

If you are so bothered about the weight sell the carbon clinchers and get some tubulars and that way you will save those extra 300-400 grams easily.

Its either that, or I'm trying to help people avoid wasting a lot of money. Or maybe both. Who knows?
  • The next few years will see the real tech that will deliver Factories are asking how do we hit well below 700 grams reliably

6 months ago I was of the opinion composites in bicycles was at an impass

We are now working with textreme fabrics and 80 ton fibres which are only really the beginning
Most of the problems with carbon will be overcome with 2 particular technologies

And then theres green composites a whole new world for the bike makers

Its not a waste of money just because for whatever reason you can't tell the difference. There's a massive difference between a £500 aluminium bike and a £5k carbon top-end road bike.

That may be, but the OP was pointing out that there is little difference between his top-of-the-range 10 year-old aluminium racer and the £5K carbon bikes of today. Different point altogether.

I wasn't really replying to the OP. Discussion threads evolve and my reply was to P_Tucker...hence quoting his post.

Why would you assume that just because I'm a knob I'm fat and rubbish at cycling? In the grand scheme of things I am obv, but compared to the average BR member I'm a cycling GOD ffs.

Are you friendly with anyone that would allow you do do some miles on a similar bike?

I'm sticking with my 10kg £500 alu bike till I'm significantly fit, and then going to do that on a loop I know like the back of my hand and decide whether it's worth upgrading.
All the above is just advice .. you can do whatever the f*ck you wana do!

Yep, good idea - base it entirely on your perception, because human perception is so reliable.

Whereas your belief that there is no difference at all between a £500 and £5000 bike is based on a series of rigorous double-blind trials of course?

Hmmmm, wasting money? I think I've fallen into your category, I've been duped by all the marketing men who wrote the ads in the glossy magazines and for my first road bike I've recently bought a carbon framed machine!

However..... I got the bike that I wanted, a bike that I cherish and, most importantly, a bike that I ride!
As much as I know I could have got something much cheaper, that probably wouldn't have made the slightest performance difference, I genuinely feel I've got value for money.

Not sure it's worth worrying about really. Buy it if you want it, but I wouldn't see a person who did buy carbon as some sort of mug.

Look at cars - most of us drive cars that will do 100mph+ despite that being totally illegal, sell them when they still have years of life in them and often pay extra for "sports" models that don't turn you into an F1 driver overnight.

It's the way of the world. Humans love cool stuff and spend accordingly. Leave 'em to it.

(my bike is a £600 aluminium one, but I'd buy a carbon superbike in a flash if I had the money)

I feel unless you reach a certain level improving fitness is much better idea than spending out on flashy kit. I've just done from a 700 quid Allez to a carbon Giant TCR, did I think that by buying a £1800 bike I would magically be 3mph faster on a 40 miler? No. However I love riding my Giant and it puts a big smile on my face every time I go out on it so for me it was worth the money as it has enhanced my enjoyment of cycling.

A bit off topic and not really answering the OPs original post but I thought I'd share my experience!
