Ooh, 16dTD sounds like a rather small engine for a van - but having said that, modern diesel engines are pretty impressive.
Have a test drive of the Peugeot if you can, see how you get on with it.
    And... 1.2? Seriously?

 Is it being sold because the owner realised it was quicker to walk everywhere?

I got a quote for a 1.9 diesel (non turbo) Berlingo, it was the same price to insure my Civic Type R!

I just preserver putting the rear seats down. The shape of he boot lids an arse though, the side straps on my Pendle rack won't latch on anywhere.

I do like a spirited drive now and again, I think a van would suck the life out of me.

My brother's on his third Vauxhall Combi and I think they've all been the 1.7 non-turbo-diesel, 80bhp I think that makes so not so different from the 1.2TD. Not that this means much, it's a horrible slug.

  • Back to looking at a 225.. The van idea has been short lived, unless I can get a nice T4/5 or vito, I'm not going to bother.

Hopefully going to look at cars tomorrow.. seen such a wide variety I'm sort of lost

i had a transit connect for a while and whilst it was OK to drive the max i could get was 34mpg. i have a 1.6 tdi skoda octavia hatch/saloon and i can fit 3 bikes in no probs..but only 2 people

but any car and roof bars would be my suggestion - i actually have 2 thule bike carriers for sale ben

How do you find the 1.6 TDI Kev? Im looking at the Skoda Octavia Elegance Estate but I'm not sure whether to look at the 1.6TDI or the 2.0TDI? The current car has 163BHP and I think the Skoda 1.6 has a little over a hundred. The 2.0 has 140ish. Still a big drop from 163 :)

    Cheers

sorry mate, only just seen this post. i find it fine but i'm only coming from a 1.9tdi golf and i actually find the skoda a little quicker with more torque. nice and smooth to drive and cruises well on the motorway and i get about 52 mpg. it all depends what you want really - it would be a big drop in performance from 163 BHP :D

Cheers, Kev. My car has been in the garage the last few days and I've been driving the Mrs VW polo which I think is a 1.2 petrol and it felt so slowwwww. Not from a racy point of view it's just I drive a lot of the Bwlch and Rhigos mountains and the car needs the power to get up over the tops.

I think it would need to be the 2.0TDI but finding one is difficult coz they're like gold dust.

    Cheers

Aren't the boot openings a bit odd shaped on the meganes? Sure I read that somewhere. How about a Mondeo STDCI? I like them.

We used to have an ST24 estate, the bike used to slide around in the back of that, I could easily get it in without putting the seats down just popping the front wheel off. Also, it sounded lovely and rorty, miss that, got a diesel Hyundai i30 now. It's grey, in every possible way.

  • They are a bit of a strange shape as you can see from the boot line, but the boot/space is actually ok, easily takes 4 lots of biking kit with the bikes on top. It's never going to swallow a bike whole like an estate would, but you wouldn't expect that from a hatch. It's a both wheels off jobby to put it inside so I leave the roof racks on since I ride 2-3 times a week on the DH rig.

Satisfies the urge to have some fun on the B roads on the way too!

Depends what you want to spend, there seems to be a nice big car auctions up in Merthyr, I've been eyeing up LDV maxus vans for a camper conversion next year, but other stuff appears quite cheap too

Double cabs make loads of sense, thats why they cost so much i spose.
