Following on from this thread - viewtopic.php?f=20005&t=12865932 I've decided to fit some cheap discs to her current Rockrider rather than buying a whole new bike, and I'd ideally like to spend less than £50 for discs, calipers, pads and cables, any recommendations please?

I have AVID BB5's with 160 rotors and they are great a big step up from the v brakes i had before BUT they are still probably over the money you want to spend so what about these?

Not sure if you get rotors mind you  However there are some cheaper options if you have a look on Chain Reactions site.

Yeah, I'd looked at them, they seem to have some fantastic deals on full kits, tempted by some of the Avid BB5's they're selling - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Avid-BB5- ... 2c5bc9af4a0 -
You can get a full set of hydros for not much more:

Have to wait a week or two, but are superb brakes: I have them on my Spesh. One of the lightest brakes on the market too.0 -

Ah im glad you mentioned those. Was reading about them on MTBR the other night. Whats the build quality like on them and more importantly power/modulation? Im quite tempted to try em.
As for the BB5's they are good brakes and will be a big improvement on what you already have. My only concern is the company as you cant be certain they are original. Otherwise go for it!0 -

I'd rather stick with mechanical for ease, although they do look like a cracking bargain.0 -
Then he'd need some shifters too if existing are combined.
Mechanical are not easier though. Hydraulics need nothing except new pads now and then.I don't do smileys.

It's got separate Avid brake levers and Deore shifters, so hopefully it should just be a case of fitting new cables.
As I said earlier, I'll probably be buying her a new bike next year anyway, so I'd rather keep the cost right down for now, and any kind of disc brake must be better than the V's in the mud.0 -
