Hi

My C2W is about to kick in, my other half as approved n+1, my company is signed up with Evans.

My question.

Are Evans like Halfords in that the quality of service you get depends on which store you use due to the quality of the staff employed at a certain store?

I've got a choice of 3 stores local to my work and 1 near home.

Local to work I have Mortimer Street, Rathbone Place and High Holborn

Near home I can easily get to the one in Crouch End.

I'll be using the one in Crouch End for my test rides as I can at least do a bit of ascending and descending as part of the test, but are any of the stores mentioned better or worse than any other when buying a new bike?

Any personal experiences of good / bad would be appreciated.

due to the number of staff, i'd probably say visit a couple yourself and make up your own mind. One person could have a great experience, but that's not to say you will (and visa-versa).

Evans are similar in a way to Halfords, but then i suppose you could say that about any shop - depends on the person you talk to, what mood their in, their knowledge etc. As a sweeping statement though, Evans tend to have more clued up staff as they're a bike shop.....not a bike/car parts/camping/car audio/tool shop where you could have a member of staff from any department serve you.

......i'd go for the one near home as well in case you need to go back for any reason.....

They're all box shifting idiots with zero customer service, so it's up to you which branch imo ......

Haven't bought a bike there' but was actually quite impressed by the 'West End' (Mortimer St, near Oxford Circus) branch:

    The staff were actually helpful...

Personally I find that staff at Evans are only interested in sales. In my experience I have yet to find an Evans employee who actually knows what they are talking about. I also bought a C2W bike from Evans & they assured me the bike I bought fitted me perfectly. Being new to the sport at the time I was of the opinion that they knew what they were talking about & was confident that I was making the right decision. I trusted what they said when they had me on the bike & were 'sizing me up' on it. Turns out that the position they recommended was totally wrong. I was experiencing massive pain in all sorts of areas & went to get a bike fit at Sigma Sport & they sorted it for me.

Now I am not necessarily blaming the chap who recommended the bike, It may be a training issue, or he may have just wanted to shift a bike knowing I had 1k to spend. Just be careful!! Pop along to '2 Wheels Good' which is round the corner from the Crouch End Evans up the opposite hill. Very good bike shop & the one I use for maintenance & servicing. They will offer you sound advice & might even measure you up if you ask nicely!

    Good luck!!!

The folks at Evans are as much use as a c0ck flavoured lollipop. Buying up lots of magazine ad space and having lots of stores doesn't mean they're any good. Help the little guy and visit a LBS where the staff are knowledgable and actually ride bikes.

And any store than can not be bothered to open before 10 a.m. is not worth going too :P
