I currently have the shimano sport MTB shoes which I use for commuting and weekends. They are about 2 years old.

These: 27455.jpg

I'm tempted to get some shiny stuff jobbies for weekend riding (but still use SPD pedals). Is it a worthwhile thing to do? Will I feel a difference? If so - any suggestions?

I'm just hoping buying new shoes will satisfy the monkey on my back that keeps whispering 'new bike new bike new bike' in my ear.

Yeah, I'm sure the monkey wont start whispering "Nice shoes, wouldn't it be good to have a new bike to match..."

Btw, my new Condor Tempo is very nice

I kmow - and the missus has given me leave to buy a new bike provided its a 0% finance deal and I dont spend over £2000. It just feels a bit extravagant! Not until I feel in myself that I've got the guns to match.

Hang on the Purse string holder has given permission to purchase a bike up to £2000 (In reality this is actually £2500 allowance ;)) and you are still here posting.

I would be dissapointed if we dont see I bought an X bike this weekend ;)

You can sure the feel the difference when you gun it. Pulled the back wheel off the ground kicking for a few lights.

Do miss them, had to go back to MO77s aka flip flops, no lift when you kick in those, they just bend!

A couple of observations from me. I recently splashed out on a pair of Spesh S-Works and SPD-SL pedals. My experiment is somewhat confounded by a trip to the Bike Whisperer AND a better diet, but I'm now going faster than ever. I have to say that the SPD-SLs, in particular, are a "better pedalling platform" (though more of a faff to clip into) but the shoes, with the Boa system and very stiff soles I'm sure contribute to comfort and speed - I just can't tell you how much.

    Cheers MRS.

I have some SPD-SLs in my desk at work but my fixie has the SPDs too so its useful having everything I commute on running on the same pedal.

When I eventually get around to buying a weekend-best bike I will deck out in top-end pedals.

As for better diet... this will always be a weak point for me.

If you're going to go for roadie shoes, Bont Vaypor's are fantastic. Expensive, but I cycled in in my specializeds this morning and they felt like absolute mush!

Sidi Dominator 5 is what I upgraded to recently for the commute. Can't recommend enough - they are fantastic. Got around 30% off at Planet X.

I got Dragons which are nice. Insoles on Sidis are rubbish though. What I liked about S-Works, apart from the fit, is that they come in half sizes.

I have bont vapours now too. Very stiff, and so far more natrual than the s works they replaced. I'm selling them on eBay if you are an 11

for the time being I've got some new specialised BG insoles which felt good on my ride home.

    I'm only a 10 (44) okgo - would have been ideal!

I've got Nike Poggios, although they're beginning to wear, now. Really nice, but I tried a pair of Sidis last year which were bloomin' lovely, so I'm tempted by those next time round.

Have to go try them on.

we're saving for a house so any purchases need to be considered against that... I'm going to have a chat with Dolan today as their Mythos frameset is on sale at £399. That might be a decent stop gap for the next 12 months before I have the space and funds (and legs to justify, hopefully) for something a bit more special.

I recommend the Shimano RT32 which take SPD's.

They look like road shoes but the cleat is recessed - really easy to walk in. So much lighter and stiffer than the (dhb) MTB shoes I had before.
