Ksyrium SL Wheels

I've just bought a bike with the SL wheels on. I took it to the LBS today and the guy immediately commented on how bad the wheels were in terms of how easily they can break. For example he said that he had a pair and his chain slipped off the large ring on the back cassette and "chewed" up the back hub. He said it was far too expensive to get the wheel repaired so he sold it on. He therefore advised me to get a plastic ring to protect the hub. He admitted they don't look too pretty but said it was worth fitting.
Assuming I do get one fitted can anyone recommend one that isn't too unsightly?
Cheers

If the bike has been set correctly then you don't need one. You own a great pair of wheels. Why tidy the house when you can clean your bike?0

complete load of rubbish from that lbs. I've had mine nearly nine years, light, strong and very stiff, great hoops ...0
-
load of bs frankly. The chain should never be able to come of the largest cog if your stops in the right place. If he did ship the chain it could have done some damage but I imagine you'd have to keep churning away at it to do anything serious.
So yeah, keep the wheels, check the stop on the RD and have fun riding0 -
As above... If someone who works at a LBS has a bike whos rear mech throws too far then I wouldnt let them anywhere near mine!0

I had to laugh out loud when I read your post! Care to name the lbs so we all know where to avoid? I've never heard such tosh. Of all the criticisms of Mavic Ksyriums (mainly expensive replacement parts) being fragile isn't one of them, they are top quality reliable wheels. As the other guys have said, if the chain leaves the sprockets it's because the rear mech has been badly set up - sounds like this guy hasn't a clue and I'd take my bike elsewhere before you let him loose on yours!
And as for the ring of shame - it's the equivalent of one of those cones dogs wear after surgery! Don't do it - looks terrible and unnecessary if the mech is set up properly.0 -
Chap in the LBS will no doubt be offering to take them off your hands/exchange them for a bargain price given half the chance.
As others have said - a fine set of wheels on the whole that should serve you well.0 -
Many thanks for your replies guys - much appreciated

Ha! Ksyrium sls rubbish? Yeah right! What a complete clown. Most or all high spec wheels will not take well to the chain coming off due to an over shift.
I cant believe he told you to use a plastic disc - like a bike from argos! Out of interest what bike did you buy and what groupset is on it?0 -
The only thing he is right about is that any replacement part will cost you a fortune. The rest is all crap...
I remember when the Specialized dealer used to go on about the fact that only Specialized knew how to do carbon frames as they had been there before everybody else... when I then reminded him that Hinault was riding a Look carbon frame in the TdF well before anyone had ever heard the name Specialized, he realised he wasn't talking to the usual "know nothing about cycling" customer.
Bear in mind most of these people have been in the business a couple of years top and have no idea of what they are talking about. They base their judgement on occasional episodes and stuff they read on the web...
