Have a shimano alivio 8 speed crank and have recently fitted 9 speed cassette, derailleur and shifters. Chain kept slipping on the middle chainring when I applied pressure, on inspection the teeth were really worn so bought a replacement middle chainring but opted to upgrade to a deore chainring. But this doesn't fit cause it hasn't got threaded holes for the chainring bolts. Was going to send it back and buy an alivio one but after reading a bit on the forum a few people were saying that 8 speed cranks will not work with 9 speed cassettes due to narrower chain. Should I cut my loses and buy a new crank or will a new alivio chainring be ok?

    yes they do.

no rings have threaded holes. the chain ring bolts are in two parts one male one female and they screw together.
