Computer advice please...

I'm looking for a reasonably priced computer that not only does heart rate, but also works off the rear wheel so I can use it with my trainer too.

If I was really greedy I'd want one that does GPS too, but I'm not exactly flush at the moment so unless I can get one that does all three for an excellent price, the aforementioned factors are more important.

Any advice from experience?

Cheers y'all!

Garmin Edge 500 with the Cadence and HR bits. You can find it for under £200.

My computer advice is don't bother and enjoy your riding without worrying about numbers 8)

  • Thats all very well but for those who are looking for a computer set up to work with a turbo trainer, there does seem very little out there which helps, apart from a Garmin, which is a lot of money. I found a Cateye, Sigma, & Velomann computer which I think all work off the rear wheel, with Speed, HRM, & Cadence. These three were on offer at around the £100 mark. I'm quite surprised at the limited selection. A lot of you guys use trainers, what set up do you have??? Do you just ride the trainer without readings??

I have Garmin Edge 500. Its brilliant. Does everything I need and more. Tbh I didnt want to spend that much and was going to get the edge 200 but I figured I might need cadence and HRM at some point. Edge 200 isnt upgradeable so I went for the 500. No regrets - eat soup for a fortnight and you wont notice the extra £60.

Why cant you just put the speed sensor from a normal wireless comp on a rear chainstay/wheel? I did that with my Cateye Strada Single wireless before I got a Garmin and it works just fine.
  • Yeah..... That sounds so easy & was what I thought. Tried three computers like that, not one picks up from the rear wheel hence the question!! Have to say, think I'll save up for a couple of months & get a Garmin 500 in the autumn. Seems to me there's a market for an affordable computer to use with a turbo trainer???

After a lot of investigating on different computers I ended up with a Decathlon B'Twin Count 14+ and HR strap.

Does Cadence, Heart Rate and Speed (Rear real sensor)

Has some pretty neat features such as target training (cadence or HR) where you give it an upper and lower desired limit nd it'll give you an on screen indication.

It can also show heart rate as BPM or % of Max etc.

Connects to PC for downloading sessions using Geonaute software and can have multiple users and multiple bikes set up on it (which is great when my daughter uses the bike for training on the Turbo a few nights a week)

Screen is nice and big and is also backlit.##Cost me £50 for the Unit and £20 for the HR strap) - money well spent in my opinion.
