Hi all
this is my first post so be gentle, for the last few years i have been competing in triathlon but am now looking to get back into mountaining biking after doing a mountain bike trathlon last month.
I have owned a GT STS for over 10 years the last 6 or 7 hung up in the garage the wheels are Sunn fat rims with the old V brakes but are looking slightly worse for wear so i am looking at changing the wheels and adding disc brakes. My frame is one of the early ones without the hanger for the caliper { i know you guys call them something else but i'am nearly 50 and they are calipers on my GSXR 1000}, it has High 5 forks on the front with mount for the caliper.
I've been looking thro the for sale stuff and there seems to be plenty knocking about but i'am not sure what i will need, i've seen the hangar brackets for the frame that you can buy on Ebay from America[can you get them over here?]. I'am nearly 15 stone so don't get hung up on the weight of things just after something that will last.
I would be gratefull for any advice before i start spending money, and NO i love my GTS 8) so will not sell it for some new fangled contraption
Cheers Lee
If anyone has any gear for sale that would work please let me know

You will need disc hubs to be able to fit the discs (basically means new wheels unless you want to unbuild/build your wheels) and you will need an adapter kit which adds a rear mount to your frame (I have no idea about these, which one is best or whether they even work)
You will need decide what size discs you want (norm is 160mm, 180mm or 203mm) and then make sure you have the correct adapters to get everything in the right place.
There are 2 different kinds of brake mount - International Standard and Post Mount (IS or PM). You will need to find out what kind you have and what kind the brakes you are fitting has then buy the relevant adapters (if needed)
Calipers are still calipers in my book
Welcome btw.0 -
are you saying that there are some mounting holes on the frame for a caliper braket? or that there is non but you want somthing to allow dics to be run?
pics of the non drive drop out would be good."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

in the early days the makers did some strange things.
hence the request for pics.
GT and Giant (and most likely others) did things where they had there own adaptors to make the frames disc ready."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

No theres no mounting bolts on the frame, i found these on Ebay item No 150784751639 it says you have to drill the drop out? just wondered if anyone had used one

basically it comes down to is you have the holes or not. if you do you take the lower one if you dont you take the upper one."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Just one more question before i forget, do different calipers have different bolt centres for mounting like motor bikes do?
Will i need a caliper that fits those hangars and one for my RST High 5 forks?, sorry if these questions seem a bit dum but this is all new to me, the only experience i've had with disc brakes is on motor bikes

have a read of the topic in the FAQs above. there are two common standards now."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

You should be able to change the rear end that was fitted to the later STS / LTS frames.
These guys carry a lot of spare parts and they might be able to point you in the right direction, http://www.mountainbikecomponents.co.uk/contactus.asp0 -
Isn't the GT STS a bit rare and lovely now? Drop up some pics for us.0
