I'm keeping a video diary of my FM028 build for those who are interested. The frame came from the Deng-Fu agent.

Wheels were a major headache, I'd saved on the gruppo, getting a Shimano 105 setup from http://bikes2race.de/ for under 400 euros new and wanted something a bit different from my Open Pro CDs I'm used to. Something a bit lighter to go with the frame. I was in my LBS (http://www.routens.com) in Grenoble where I saw some Ultegra WH 6700 on sale for 239 euros. I'd been considering this wheel but have no experience of factory builds, buying from a reputable LBS gave me the incentive to pull the trigger

Am I keen to finish the build - yes keen but nervous.

  • I have the same wheels, been riding them for a year now and they are great. I am amazed at how easily you got the tyre on though. It is a total nightmare trying to get tyres on mine. There have been a few posts about this issue with these wheels before. Never tried Conti tyres, just Schwalbe and Challenge so far. I hate it, but have to use levers with my wheels. I can get tyres on other wheels without levers. It's just these that are a pain. Love em otherwise. And the Ultegra grey rims go really nice with the tan sidewall challenge tyres.

You need a proper scale for weighing the frame davidof, you can't get an accurate reading from the table top one you're using .... enjoying the vids though mate, nice one ...

I have a FM015 myself, had it about 8 months. I got mine at a steal of a price! It worked out that I paid about £260 delivered for frame, fork, headset, seatpost clamp, barrel adjusters and a couple of spare rear mech hangers.

For the price it's built into a good bike IMHO. I've put a couple of thousand miles on it now and had no issues what so ever.

I built it with a SRAM Rival group set I picked up in a sale from Merlincycles before Xmas for just below £400 delivered. Moved over Hope Hoops wheelset off my previous bike. (Although I've just purchased som Ksyrium Elites) Prolite handlebars and stem off eBay £30, Thomson elite seat post eBay again £40 and Exustar pedals £20 from Ribble. Had spare bar tape knocking about in the spare parts box :)

So without taking into account the cost of the new wheels and the old wheels prior, build cost came to about £750-£800.

Hope you enjoy your new bike!

p.s the Ultegra wheel set is a great buy! Got my Dad a set for Xmas this year and he rates them highly, no issues what so ever, lots of miles and the roads here are horrific!

I love this thread, thanks for keeping us updated with the video diary. Also the green and naked carbon flashes look great.

Good video, it reminds me of my build. These frames are good quality as you can see how easy it all fits together, I can't wait to see the Finished bike. I didn't go as far as you, I just took pics of the build. I'm glad I did though, it's nice to look back at it and see how it comes together. Keep up the good work. :D

Got the bars and stem and k7 so finished the build up, I'm hesitating about cutting the fork at the moment. It is the standard neco headset and wondering whether to put a spacer below and on top as some people suggest. Last carbon steerer I cut I didn't bother with either.

You're chainset fitting video is inaccurate. The shimano bottom bracket you fit is not a BB30 type.

    Million Dollar question ..

how much has this cost you all in,???

certainly cheaper than buying new and a whole lot more satisfying i bet.. cant wait to get a start on my custom build.

  • i say slam the stem.

    Rule #45// Slam your stem.
A maximum stack height of 2cm is allowed below the stem and a single 5mm spacer must always – always – be stacked above. A “slammed down” stack height is preferable; meaning that the stem is positioned directly on the top race of the headset.

Great vids and that's a really nice bike. Your left hand rear brake is fouling the tyre though, just in case you haven't noticed
