Ebay item - A good Buy?

I have just seen this road bike on Ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GIANT-TCR-ROA ... 2572c8fc36 which has caught my eye because:
A) It's not far from me
B) It'll probably be in my price range (up to £1,000)
C) I like Giant
D) it's carbon framed

BUT....I'm new to road biking (I go everywhere on a 1995 Muddyfox MTB at the mo) and this will be my first foray into road stuff. I like distance riding and I'm going out each Sunday to build up strength & endurance with a view to doing sportives. My questions are:
1) At what price would this be a good purchase bearing in mind the description?
2) Would it be a good base from which to update?
3) Would I be better spending my money on new?

I'm 6' 0" tall if that makes any difference. CHEERS!

It's a fairly old bike, with a mish mash of components, albeit good ones, but for £1k you could do a lot better for your money buying new, a lot on here would recommend the cannon dale caad 10, which is highly rated but aluminium. I waited until later last year and got a Scott CR1 for £1100, and I think you will find similar bargains on other makes even now.
  • The Cannondale CAAD10 is lovely but retailing above the £1,000 budget mark and earlier models are not easy to come by. I take your point about the Giant on Ebay being an old bike. At the price he/she is asking, it would have to be considered a good buy as I would be gutted to spend that money and end up wth a 'dog'!

you can get a cannondale caad10 with 105 spec from westbrook cycles for £999 at the moment. Liquigas colour scheme only I believe but had a chance to look at them last week and was very impressed :)

just add it to your basket and look closely at the next screen - there will be a discount code on there.
apply the code and the price will change.
    i think its caad10105

I'd say the starting bid of £650 is already too much for that bike.
    More problems but still living....
  • Thanks for your help everybody, I will NOT be buying on Ebay!!
