Compact Frame size?

So basically, I've got a Flat handlebar road bike at the minute, but it's too big for me (XL Frame with oversized stem). Discovered while doing the Manchester to Blackpool ride that 15 miles or more and my bike gets trashed and I have to hobble around or take 5 minutes out to recover
Been offered a Carrera Virtuoso '09 in Medium which is 19", or 48cm. Being 5'11 myself, I would of thought that was too small but then compact frame comes into it, so would this be an alright size for me would I need to go for a bigger size?
Plus I'm selling my old bike if anyone cares to have a gander? Basically a Carrera Gryphon merged with a Boardman Road team frame and brakes

For comparison, you measure the effective top tube length of compact frames. Standover clearance is never an issue but reach is key.0
