Hi,

I had a bit of an argument with my Merlin Malt 4 at the weekend and proceeded to kick her very hard on the front derailleur. Needless to say I bent it good and propper to the point where I can no loger get into the biggest cog at the front. To make it up to her I'm going to buy a new derailleur. But.........there's so many to choose from i'm really not sure which one to go for!?

Looking on Wiggle, http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano/cycle/m ... railleurs/ the ones that look the closest to mine would be the XT M781 and the XT M786 because they have the black ring that goes round the seatpost, but mines only a 9 speed at the back (3 at the front), not a 10 speed. Does that matter?

I'm not really up to date with my knowledge on components i'm afraid, so don't want to get the wrong one.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

so what do you have fitted now? you need the same pull and swing.

have a look at the part number on yours.

It's an XT on there at the moment.

Stupid question, but where abouts will the part number be?

Depends on model I think. Take it off and have a look - it's often printed very small. Then Google the model number, it'll tell you what it is. Replace with similar.

and as there have been XT front mechs for many many years and at least 4 versions of each year model..... stamped somewhere maybe on the cage. or just post a pic and the type can easily be seen or go and look on shimanos webby and ID the type yourself.

    It's an FD-M770, and judging by this post it's 31.8mm viewtopic.php?p=14913448 so I guess I need the 28.6/34.9mm dual pull!? http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=52290
