No hard and fast rules because so much depends on maintenance, terrain, weather and what have you but is 3k a decent mileage before replacing the chain?

    Yes, I would say so.
Swim. Bike. Run. Yeah. That's what I used to do.

3000 miles, i should say very good. I only get around 1200 to 1500 miles out of mine, well maintained, whatever the make. But i do get out out the seat a lot and push along, perhaps that makes a difference.

I'd love to know what's the chain life is on one of the tour riders bikes.

I'm on about 2,500 miles on the road bike (mainly dry, long distance riding) and the chain's nearly shot (SRAM 991).

Meanwhile the XT 10 speed chain on the mountain bike was changed after about 750 miles - and that really was shot!

I used to rotate a pair of chains at about 1200-1500 miles, but now settle on chucking a new one on when it feels like it needs it. 1728 miles last time, which was ok in my book.

I don't get it either, my chain gets rotated at least once every few yards.
