I’m going to upgrade my brakes on my Giant XTC composite 29er but can’t decide which brakes to go with been looking at the Hope X2, Shimano XTR or the Magura MT 8, all very pricey so I want to get it right, any thoughts on these or any other good setup

Have you read the recent MBUK group test?

Personally I'd go with Shimano of those, although I think the MT8's outpointed it it was close and subjective.

    Or Formula....

The individual reviews will be on here, what you loose is the rankings but the comments may help you....I'm in India right now hence posting at Mid day not some stupid O'clock!

Why not look at the Avid XO Trail brakes ?
I know they haven't been tested like some of the others but they do look good.

I'm 200km offshore, Angola. Glad to see the BR community gets around a bit.

If I was gonna drop that much on a set of brakes it'd be out of the XTR and the Formula R1 (with carbon levers  )

I'd go for Shimano, every time.
However, I'd go for the XT. The performance, aesthetic and weight differential is negligible, but there's a substantial difference in price.
