why would a BB or head tube need facing?

As per the title really. Why is facing necessary when upgrading forks or BB?
I mean, if the frame is already fitted with BB and a fork, why would facing be necessary as surely the faces must be parallel for the existing BB and fork to work properly.
I'm not upgrading anything, its just a general query.
Thanks

the quality of the work is often poor.
if you suffer from poor bearing life then it is a good idea to have the faces checked."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

It depends on whether the bottom bracket is internal or external such as a hollow tech ii. In an external bb the bearings run parallel to the bb shell so parallel faces are important. Also you get the headtube faced when replacing the headset, not the fork.
Mind you, I've replaced my bb and headset without any facing with no problems so far.0 -

even internal BB should have one face faced. the one that the BB butts up to. as can be noticed by the people who full fit the drive side of the BB and then can not get the non drive side on."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
