Hi - i'm in the manchester-blackpool tomorrow - not a 'big' ride i know, but fun anyway.
I'm just tinkering with the bike - oiling, cleaning the usual and i wonder if i should change my tyres? it has a set of Michelin Pro Race3's on which have covered about 1600 miles - so not 'knackered' but not exactly 'box fresh'
on the other hand, i have a set of conti gatorskins hanging on the wall from an old single-speed i had some time ago - they aren't new either but probably only have 100-150 miles on them and do look 'box fresh'.
the conti's are the rigid type so quite a lot cheaper and lower spec than the pro race, but are in better condition - my goal is to get from manchester to blackpool without "incident" (cant put the 'P' word in there!) - so which would be better?
any thoughts?

Don't risk it - as simple a task as it is there's always the danger you'll somehow break the bike and not be able to do the ride.
I've done several sportives and 40-50 miles rides lately on semi bald tyres because I just haven't had the time to fit the new ones I bought and didn't want to rush it!0 -
If it's working,don't fix it before a ride.0

How is the OPs going to damage the bike by changing the tyres?
Given the heavy rain, expect there's lots of debris on the road and therefore if you'd rather not have the inconvenience of punctures, then the Gatorskins will be better than PR3s.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0 -
Check the wear indicators on the PR3s?
I probably wouldn't change them as I often screw up and wreak a few inner tubes when changing tyres.. but you're probably better at changing tyres than me.0 -
hi - as monty said - there was no issue with the bike - at time of typing this mornig it was in bits on a workstand!
I swapped them in the end - the gators are pretty new and as monty said, i'm just hoping for an incident free event!
It's all back together now and good to go!
thanks folks0 -

poorly designed tyres then!
Some have them -> The Giant ones on my Defy have little circular ones on the top of the tyre -> when its gone you need.0 -
weird - mind don't have any tread or marks on the tyre at all - it's purely a slick.
quite a worn one at that - lots of little cracks and debris bits in them - glad i changed them actually.0
