Blackburn AirStik SL - how to use?

I've just invested in one after reading the great reviews and it's tiny!
Before I'm miles away from home and need to use it, I gave it a go on the bike in the garage and I just can't seem to get a decent amount of air in the tube? It says it's capable of 160psi so I'd be happy with 90-100psi but I can only manage around 60psi before air starts leaking from the seal. It's got a screw on head which is difficult to turn when mounted over the valve. Removing the pump is difficult without feeling like the valve is going to be ripped from the tube!
What am I doing wrong? It must be user error as no one seems to complain about these pump!
Thanks,
Craig
