In yesterdays stage there was a four man breakaway from the peleton. Because they broke away are they aloud to take part in a the intermediate sprint, then once the peleton comes to the sprint, they get to do their own sprint? i.e are both aloud to pick up points?

Or

Were the peleton aloud to take part because the breakaway didnt compete against each other, and just rolled through the finish line?

first across the line gets maximum points, simple as that, the sprinters in the peloton just get less points.

Theres points for the first 10 (or so) - so there were still points available for the main bunch to take.

A breakaway like yesterday are more concerned about the stage win, and don't have the luxury of popping out of the bunch for a sprint and then dropping back into the slipstream of their teammates. If they'd contested the sprint, they'd have less chance to "rest". Breakways rarely contest intermediates.

Some quite impressive reeling in by the bunch though, timed it to perfection, even with the crash!

Top 15 riders get Green Jumper points. The peloton were competing for the final 11 points scoring places.

Generally the guys who do most work in the breakaway will be allowed to take the sprint uncontested.
All the above is just advice .. you can do whatever the f*ck you wana do!

I know some breakaways are for the purpose of getting your sponsors some air time. but yesterday that breakaway looked set on trying for the stage win. Why didnt they drop back and let their team do the work and reserve energy. They were out on their own for a long time, they were bound to be too tired.

Or were they trying to make the peleton go faster so they could close the gap on the yellow jersey?

Its always a faint hope that you will stay away to the end - but if you dont try - then theres no way you'll win.
A flat stage like yesterday will almost inevitably give the win to a sprinter.
If you're not a sprinter you've zero chance.
If you go up the road - theres a slightly better chance - plus you get the publicity.

I know we all like to see an exciting sprint finish, but on the rare occasion that a breakaway does make it it is something special in my opinion.

I was willing them on yesterday, shouting at the tv and everything

Yes, seanorawe, they looked set on winning - and I thought the crash a few k's out might have helped them! But sitting in the group leaves them with Cav/Greipel/Sagan etc to contest with at the line - sometimes taking a chance off the front is best. The sprinter's teams looked pretty organised yesterday, and teammates of the breakaway didn't get a chance to disrupt the chase.

Oh, and one of the breakaway has just jumped off the front to take the intermediate sprint - what do I know eh?

Just to correct your grammar, the word you should be using is "allowed"

Just to correct your sentence, the word you should have used is "spelling" ;-)

Grammar refers to the structure of the sentence and punctuation. But I thought answering the OP's question was more important...
