I’ve just bought a Bike Workshop stand from Lidl and it’s fantastic. It folds down like a projector stand and is extremely well made. I don’t think quality has been compromised to keep the price down. As with all Lidl special items they are only available for a limited time and that’s why I posted this. These became available from today 05/06/12. It has a magnetic bit on the tool tray and a telescopic arm to hold the handle bars in place if you are working on the front wheel. I have been waiting for this offer to come up as I have read about the quality elsewhere.

3 year guarantee - £29.99

For comparison I have shown some others.

Decathlon – Velo-works

2 year guarantee – £49.99

Looks substantial – The feet look to be permanent so if you don’t have the space to keep it as it is you would need to dismantle and assemble as required.

Park Tools

? guarantee - £70.00

Draper

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Draper-59304-Heavy-Duty-Work-Stand/dp/B0002GUOAI

Described as heavy duty but requires you to keep the front wheel on the ground as otherwise it is unstable.

? guarantee - £20.00 – Ebay

I hope this post proves to be useful to someone

My brother picked one up today too he said he likes it - Sadly last week I purchased this from Amazon

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004 ... 00_s00_i00

Haven't opened it yet, but here's hoping it's just as good what with an extra tenner on it... Bah!

Yes, i agree with the OP. the stand is ace. seems sturdy enough and as it folds down it doesnt take over the whole garage. well chuffed.
The added bonus as it isnt in 500 parts that you have to put together :-)

  • I also picked one of these up yesterday.

Gave it a quick try last night doing a chain clean and lube and it seems sturdy enough even when cranking quite hard. Not very impressed with the bar that apparently holds the hadlebars (maybe I just didn't fit ir right) but for £30 it seems good value.

I just purchased 1 in Forfar and very impressed with the quality of the item.
A lot better than I was expecting and will work easily outside on uneven grass surface without any problem of falling over. Nice tool tray, very good design.
Folds up into a small unit and pop it in the corner.
    1 left in Forfar today.
Got 2 pairs of shorts and they seem ok as well.

Had one for 12 months now. It's been fine. Nothing has broken or worn.

The main clamp can be a bit of a pain to close compared to the cam-based ones like Park Tools - but at that price...

I got one of these last year and I'm very happy with it, However I know what you mean about the bar for the handlebars.

Mine broke after a couple of uses. The small plastic clip on the end broke. The stand itself is very good though and still going strong :)

The bar that holds the handlebar is in the wrong position in the pictures.
It should fit between the top clamp bar and the handlebar, it has curved ends for this position.

Waited for nearly an hour before Lidl opened on the day to get one, and glad I did! It's awesome. Fully extended it holds the bike way about head level, so you can fix stuff and clean the bike up underneath as well. Really sturdy and great value!

The Lidl one also now has a cam type mech for the clamp, unlike the amazon one pictured - although the actual product may well have been updated.

Yeah mines real sturdy and the handlebar holder works fine to just stop them flopping about lol

I bought one at the weekend.

Very solid and good value. The only downside is I think the clamp should have some foam or rubber padding to look after my expensive bit of carbon. Anyway a bit of pipe lagging has sorted that.

Shouldn't really clamp a carbon seat post... May be worth getting an alloy one for when it comes to clamping it up.

    Don't wanna crush it!

How is it going to be held in the frame if you can't clamp a seatpost? Isn't that exactly what they're designed to have done to them? :P I get the point tbh - if I had a nice bit of carbon, I'd probably get a cheapo Alu one for the stand

My carbon post is fine in the workstand. As said above they're designed to be clamped and the seat post clamp is done up to 5Nm which is a lot tighter than I do up the workstand clamp. Also the workstand clamp is spread over a wider area.

If you look at the thickness of the carbon on a seat post it's quite thick compared to the frame.

To be honest I only clamp lightly - probably no more than 1N. It is not enough to crush the foam let alone the carbon.

For me the stand is about access - if I have to loosen a tough nut - I will do that before put the bike in the stand.

Is there a problem with clamping the crossbar (Top tube)?

It works fine for me, as I have cheap Alu bikes, but it may damage the paintwork on more expensive rides.

Just bought one today (17/3/15) after reading the above reviews. Got the second to last one just ahead of someone who got the last one in stock at Sixfields Northampton. Amazing value for £24.99, a good solid German build.
Lightly holds my carbon frame at its point of balance and also holds tight to my much heavier MTB. Solid as a rock on its four legs
    Very pleased with this buy.

High wycombe store had a load of them in stock. If someone is looking for one give lidl a call, they will look in the local stores and give you a ring back if there is one local, they hold it for a day for you to collect. I got my dehumidifier that way.
