Hi there
I have a 2009 trek 6500 hardtail which currently has forks with 80mm of travel. I have acquired a set of fox forks that have 120mm and hope to transfer these to my trek. What sort of effect would this have on my bike and would it be possible? I know people have put 100mm travel forks on these bikes without any issues before.
Anyone have any thoughts?

Don't do it. It will ride like a barge and will not climb.
The head angle will be 2 degrees slacker as will the seat angle. Your weight will be further back.
A total pig to ride. Sell the forks or the bike and get something suitable."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Pick the front of your bike up so tyre is 40mm from the floor with back on it. Look at the differences, it'll be a fair amount and translate like nick says, probably.0

It is possible to shorten some fox forks from 120mm to 100mm-not sure if this can be done for yours though.
