Hi everybody,

I have had an idea today and contacted silverstone about it. obviously it is still extremely early but i would like to generate a bit of interest and get some input on how things would work.

My idea is to stage a 24 hour team relay say 5 laps each and swap through the pits of silverstone.

I am looking to get this all setup by summer 2013. I have two charity's i would like to raise money for. The first is Christies, the second is Neumann pick type c. both are close to heart and realy need donations.

Any input about how much you would be willing to pay for the event and if you would prefer to raise a minimum for my charity's and then you can also raise extra for your own. I also need some help with the logistics of organizing an event like this as i know it isn't going to be easy.

Anyway i could ramble on forever about it please if you would be interested in joining in or have any ideas to put forward don't hesitate to reply. even if its to say daft idea lol

Be interesting to see how much they want for the circuit, usually it is several thousand a day to hire for testing etc but that can include emergency cover so you may find it cheaper. I would be amazed if you they let you off costs (but stranger things have happened) though note it is the 'sales' team that are calling!

I would definitely be interested in doing this, not so much as a race but as a ride. Teams consisting of 2, 3, 4? I am sure that I could get enough people together to make a team. Hope it happens!

Cost could be a problem but if there was enough people interested it would not be too bad. The cost of the circuit would have to be paid from the entry fee plus some for the charity.

The site is a pan-flat former aerodrome. Time triallers might love it, but I think I'd go for a more sporting course e.g. Brands Hatch.

Having done a few laps last month - Oulton Park is good to ride round, elevation changes, bit of scenery etc. Race circuits are super-smoth, no 'road furniture' to worry about - but as stated above, can be a bit monotonous to ride on for any great distance. Hats off to anyone who does the Le Mans event as that is on the short 'Bugatti' circuit and not the full one used for the car 24-Hours, so must be a real test of mental fortitude - though I have often thought the Nurburgring event with a 14-mile lap could be interesting.

Shouldn't this thread be in another zone – amateur race or sportives?

There is something similar already at Brands Hatch, although only 12 hour relay. Maybe you could get ideas from there.

Not my cup of tea but with the right price/set-up etc. you might get some interest.
  • Thanks for the replies. I wasnt sure where to put this either, I was thinking if I put it in the pro section I may get some race junkies who would be interested :-) now I know there is some interest I will do everything I can to get this sorted,

    Cheers guys

If you remind me (and I will forget), I ll give you a view of the Le Mans one after i ve done it. I have a couple of 24hr MTB ones to compare it to.

One thing that worries me is that apparently you re looking at 7-10 mins a lap, which is bloody short. I can see that getting very boring very quickly. MTB ones benefit from having courses that are decently technical so that your brain wakes up and you can get excited on an gnarly singletrack decent, even if your legs are still asleep in the tent.

I've done an MTB one with work before but it has been ditched this year, if well arranged (i.e. stuff to do when not riding) I'd be keen to do this.
  • Everything u are all suggesting is going in a spreadsheet so keep the ideas coming, im going to speak with evans cycles aswell and see if they will setup like they do for the skyride events
