I have a bit of a problem due to my boneheadedness. My brother in law very kindly donated his old On One 456 steel frame to me and I have managed to cross thread the thread on the frame where the rear derailler fits onto. Its is only the first couple of threads, would it be possible to screw the mech in from the other side to recut the threads or is it a tap and die job? Please be gentle with me, I feel enough of a pillock as it is  .

The thread is M10X1mm the same as shimano rear hub axels.

Get an axel and cut a slot in the thread 90 degrees to the thread and screw it in from the rear.

Or get a tap and just the thread again.

Or take it to your LBS as there are ways to fix it if it is to far to re cut the thread.

Some bike shops have a kit for just this problem. Its like an oversized chainring bolt nut.

If it's tottally fubarred you can buy inserts that fit from the back of the hanger.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Thanks for the replies, I took apart an old mech I had and used the bolt to recut the thread from the other side, jobs a good 'un.
