GXP BB fitting problem

Just replacing the old style (2010) SRAM GXP bottom bracket on my Boardman RC with a new 2012 one. According to the SRAM GXP instructions the bracket requires two 2.5 mm spacers. However if I fit them the bearings are overloaded when I tighten the crank (I don't get to full torque before they are loaded. If I remove the spacers or fit one on the drive side only there are clear gaps.

The original GXP had no spacers and there appeared to be no gaps. So I'm more than a little confused??

Any advice appreciated. Typically what seemed like a simple job is not turning out that way.....
