I emailed a friend who has just started a new job as a lifeguard (an idea for Willhub!) to ask how it was going, he replied in English...

haha when i was in portugal we kept using 'obrigada' - and only the last day did our nice host say - I didnt have the nerver to tell you but you're using the feminine version....as if you were a big girl.The dissenter is every human being at those moments of his life when he resigns
