Boardman v Rockrider

Hi

I'm going to start building a single pivot full suspension bike. I've got a few bits and pieces and am looking for a second hand frame.
Trying to do it relatively cheaply and the 2 best options look to be the Boardman fs or the Rockrider 9.1. Whats better or is there not much in it? Also, anything else I should be looking at?

Thanks

Rockrider....... Boardman is a 'halfords' bike....... Rockrider has brilliant build quality, good welding, and can be confuse with Specialized :D

It'll be a custom build. I'll choose my own spec, cheers.

I don't think you can go far wrong with either. If you are just buying a frame it depends what's available really.

  • True. I'm in no hurry so might just wait for a Rockrider to turn up.

I've still got the Carrera and don't think I could live with the shame of owning 2 Halfords bikes :)

carrera are built by merida, boardman are owned and built by merida, specialized are also built by merida, nothing to be ashamed of

i have the rockrider 9.1 and its a great bike, the spec it came with is pretty good, slx rear mech, slx shifters deore drivertrain and front mech, tora air forks, the only downside is the rear shock which is the basic x-fusion o2 with no lock-out but been told that their full suss system is the same as yeti(but not for sure)

  • Thanks Hainman. I was reading the review on bikeradar and the ‘NEUF’ set up is similar to the Yeti switch system.

Since I'll just be buying the bare frame I can get a rear shock with lockout. I'll get a secondhand frame eventually but does anyone know if the frames are available to buy direct from the manufacturer?

Maybe I'm missing something but I thought the reason that those brands were so popular right now was the specs are way better than anything else in their price range.

If your just after a frame why limit yourself to those two? I wouldn't think there'd be many Boardman/Rockrider frames floating around anyway

And tbh - it would probably make more sense to buy the fully built bike, strip it down and sell the bits (if you really must have either of those frames only)

Or have I got it completely wrong... :?

There are a few Boardman frames knocking about in eBay and in the classifieds

  • Thing is I've already got parts to go on the frame mate. All i really need is a frame and a rear shock. There are a few secondhand frames come up - a rockrider went for £60 on ebay the other day. I maybe should have bought it but didn't want to 'panic buy' as I'd only started looking.

I'm not limiting myself to those 2 am open to other ideas - but don't want to spend any more than £150 tops on the frame and would prefer to spend nearer the £100 mark.
Is there any other decent single pivot frames for that price? Santa Cruz superlight, Cannondale rz and and all the other brands are going for much more than that.

Will your parts fit though? Chances are the bottom bracket wont be the right size, cables wont be the right length, seatpost wont be the right diameter, steerer on forks may not be long enough - unless you have deliberately bought parts that fit?
  • Very true mate.
I've got a set of 100mm forks to sell that'll help fund the longer travel ones that I'll need once i know what i need.

I hadn't thought about the brake hoses and cables not being long enough, is this likely?

I'm prepared for maybe buying an odd seatpost or BB but don't want this to cost me a fortune! It's true what you say though and it'll probably cost me a lot more than i first think - as usual!

fek it am no going to bother..

my rr 9.1 run 120mm forks and the cables are not full enclosed like the shifter cables so you could prob just cut and fit to measure for that.the cablesare actually run under my rear shock top bolt under the frame but suppose it doesnt need to be.only pain in the arse is at the rear the cable on each side stick out a bit so i cable tied them down abit.the bb is one of the shimano hollow tech one i think
