Where to watch Stage 16
Following the Etape my mates and I are staying on, camping in the Pyrenees and doing some riding and trying to catch some of the Tour as it comes past. One of my mates is particularly keen on camping on one of the iconic climbs (ideally the Tourmalet) to get some of the carnival atmosphere the night before.
Maybe I'm getting old but I am a bit dubious about this tbh - from what I remember of the Tourmalet there is no shade, no flat ground and very little space on the sides of the road. What's more I'll have my wife (now six months pregnant) along..... No water, no toilets, no shade and sleeping on a steep slope - she's a tough cookie but this may lead to ructions!
Should I grow a pair - take a crappy tent along and live for the now? Are there better, slightly more civilized spots we could base ourselves but still got the atmosphere? Or should we stick to my plan and cycle up the during the mornign before the race, forgoing the "krazeee" antics on the mountains?
