I've got a bit of an urge to start upgrading, and whether it's the right place to start or not, I'm fancying some carbon bars and a shorter(lighter stem) on my Spesh pitch.

So can someone give me the pro's and con's of carbon bars over stock 6061 alloy. I'm talking like for like lengths etc.

Things I'd like to know...

1. Any lighter -some don't seem to be compared to some alloy ones?
2. Shock absorption ? Better than alloy?
3. Comfort - perhaps linked to 2.
4. Anything else ?

Certainly browsing generally carbon seems often to be similar weightto alloy and some scandium bars are often lighter (or at least claimed to be ), so why bother ?

Ditto for stems too - benefits and drawbacks?

It all depends on what usage. They can be lighter, stronger, more comfortable or none of the above. When done right it can offer more strength for less weight.

Just make sure you choose one (as with alloy) to suit your needs.
  • Well most of my serious riding is trail centre stuff but I'm looking at singletracks locally for more natural rides.

680mm length, 31.8mm diameter and medium rise preferred.
