Hi everyone, noobie question coming up.

I've had my bike for about 3 years, and apart from changing the contact points and tyres my bike is pretty much standard.

My standard bottom bracket has finally given up so I'd like to upgrade this to a Hope item as I like the idea of them being easy to service, plus its a bit of bling!

As I know nothing about this type of thing, would a Hope BB fit my bike? I'm also using the standard hollowtech cranks.

Thanks for any help.

What cranks do you have? It probably would fit, but to be sure you need to know:

    - Cranks
    - Bottom Bracket shell type
    -Bottom bracket in question

Hope this helps, I'm ding this at work on my mobile.

I found this online as I don't have the bike with me.

    Chainset. Shimano FC-M521-L Octalink.

Bottom bracket. Shimano ES-25 Octalink /68-121mm shell.

    Hope this helps, thanks.

    Typical

    What cranks would suit? SLX?

Or would I need to go XT?

Any Shimano with external bottom bracket for 68/73mm shells. But the cranks generally come with a bottom bracket anyway, and are better value than hope by far.

I'd just get another Octalink unit for what you have. It will last longer.

Thanks for your help, I'll give it some thought.

The standard BB has always felt rough so I thought I'd be better off with something different. External types, I thought were meant to be better.

define better. there was nothing wrong with square taper BBs. the problem was with the way the cranks attached and the need to control the position of the chain rings.

if you do do external do get the BB faced.

They are not, it just makes it easier for the manufacturers as they don't have to make them in different sizes. (Although now with all the new press fit stuff etc that's gone out the window a bit)
In theory the larger bearings are an improvement, but on the downside they are more exposed so often don't last very long. And as the BB shell becomes part of the system, it has to be faced accurately.
A decent cartridge BB will last forever. And Octolink is a good system.
    IMHO of course.

I must apologize I'm not mechanical minded when it comes to what parts work together (though I am learning) and talk of facing etc. I'm more an oil the chain and ride person so get a bit lost with this kind of thing.

Would I be better off just replacing what I've got like for like, or would it be worth going for a complete new chainset? The one on there is 3 year old.

facing is an LBS job. see the FAQs above to see what happens.

if you rings are still good i would just change the BB. if the rings need changing i would change the lot.

I think the rings are ok, I had the bike serviced in April and the shifting is still nice and crisp.

I'll call into the lbs and see about getting the BB changed. I'll report back how I get on.

    Thanks for your help.

Just thought I'd give an update on this.

I got the bottom bracket changed about a month ago with the next model up in the range (ES51 I think) but to be honest it now feels and sounds no better to what I had.

Is this just the way these BB's are? Or do they take time to settle in??? I'm starting to wonder if I've wasted my money and I'm in two minds weather or not to take it back to the shop :?

Any advice would be welcome, thanks.

so how is it with the chain off?

    should be smooth and silent.

Right then, I've just had the chain off and as you say Nick it is smooth and silent.

Feel a little silly, and a bit baffled still as to where the noise is coming from. Could it be the rear hub on the way out?

Process of elimination. Remove/service/replace until it goes. There is no other way unfortunately!

Thanks for the link, I'm now thinking it's coming from the hub/cassette area :?

I can see this rumbling on for some time (pardon the pun)

Gave the bike a good clean and lube today and when I had the back wheel off, I spun the cassette backwards just to have a listen and the noise seems to be coming from the hub.

Is there anything I can do with the hub or is it a case of just replacing it? The hub is a Shimano FH-M475

The hub or the freehub? The hub is easy, - see Parktools on servicing a cup and cone hub.
The freehub - not sure if Shimano are servceable, but whole hubs are cheap and you can just swap the freehubs.
