Carbon Fork Assessment

I purchased a secondhand carbon fork from a Bikeradar forum user.

The UD carbon finish in the steerer has a crack going all the down. You can even feel the depression by running your fingernail across it.

I want to gauge what, if any, sense can be made out of it. I realise this is only a web forum and really a physical inspection is in order but the pictures describe a fair bit.

Looking for any further knowledge and experiences.

Any visible damage or cracks means scrap. Carbon parts rely on their shape and to a point surface finish. I work in a shop and as part of my job I assess accident damage. As a matter of course, I will condemn any carbon fork involved in any serious collision even without any marks on it. If an insurance company wants to xray it, thats the only way of being sure.

From what I can see from your pictures there is no way I would fit that to a bike. Looks like a pretty serious fracture.

Was it described as damaged in the classified ad on here?

No it wasn't described as such.

  • I'm no carbon expert but you can see from the wear around the crack that that damage is not new, the scratches and marks surely show that?

Halfway up the post in the 2nd to last photograph is clear.
