Bike Cleaning??????

Anyone got any advice on bike cleaning. Every site i look at contradicts the site before. Yes you can use a hose, no you can't, yes you can use hot water, no you can't. I've only cleaned my bike once, i gave it a quick hose down and it came up great! I haven't used any products like oil, degreasers or lubes as i don't know which ones i should get, or what parts to use em on. All the contradictions i've came across have made scared to touch the bloody bike incase i'm damaging it. Can i use a hose or not, and if not, why? Same question for hot water. Sounds a bit of a daft thing to ask about, but it could save me damaging a perfectly good bike. Any help would be appreciated, cheers!
