How do you create your own MTB night light?

The question is in the title.
I want to do some night rides in the summer holidays soon and i would like to construct a LED torch that can be attached to either my helmet or on my bike. 8)
The reason why i would like to make it is that i know that my dad can get the parts cheap and i can solder & read electronic circuits on paper fine, its just i don't want to spend £100 or whatever it costs to get a beam strong enough to see the trail ahead clearly.
If anyone has any ideas, please can you share?
Thanks

My god road cycling is scary! I'm going to keep my relaxing rides to the trails where everything is green, fast and less crazy.

You don't need to create one..... Just buy one(or 2 or 3) from deal extreme or kaidomain ! 501b xml t6 seems to be the current best vfm.my stripped and polished push-iron http://www.bikeradar.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=127542860

also a 22mm pipe clip (snap plastic type) makes a good helmet mount for these torches - attched to the helmet with a plastic number plate screw or such.0

Not used it in anger, and perhaps the beam design isn't sooper dooper like the £400 lights, but i got one of these from eBay for £30... CREE XML XM-L T6 1800 Lumen LED Cycle Bicycle Lamp Bike Light HeadLamp Headlight
and it has enough umpf to light up the entire primary school for 100m !0 -

Jeez - i try to be helpful lol !
In my defence, its my son's primary school which we happen to live opposite - just happened to be the only building more than 50feet from the front of my house !0 -
As said above and in the Big Lights Thread, you can either buy a bike light like the £30 one or a torch like the 501b. The torch will be considerably lighter, but will have shorter battery life so you may need to take extra batteries with you depending on how long you want to ride for. If you buy a torch(around £10 for a single xml-t6 one) you will also need to buy batteries, mounts and a charger. However, the batteries and charger you buy seperately will likely be better quality and of a similar total price to the £30 light.
You will probably need 2 xml torches or lights.
There are other options too, but the above will be the cheapest and probably fine for your needs.0 -
I think its a good idea for me to take a torch because i only do 1 or 2 hour rides. Its just that the woods are hard to ride through if you can't see properly. My god road cycling is scary! I'm going to keep my relaxing rides to the trails where everything is green, fast and less crazy.0

Torches can be got from about a tenner, not worth building your own. Just add a bar mount, batteries and charger and away you go.0

What bar mount for this torch?
