Loosing some gears

I am thinking that 10 speed is pointless & stupid on my DH bike, I'm shifting at least two ratios every time as the ratio's are too close. I would rather have 6 or 7 gears over the same range but with more gap between the ratio's.
I'm thinking I could get a larger range cassette and set the stop screws to block the 3 or 4 largest rings and maybe even take them off the cassette.
Will this work?

Set up:
SRAM X0 DH rear mech
SRAM X9 shifter
SRAM PG-1070, 11-26t, 10-Speed cassette

    Yes.

Often done. In fact hope are doing a 6spd cassette IIRC.

Would not bother using a 10spd base.

Thats the components I have already got so I want to just change the cassette to a larger range one & block out some ratios.
Can you still get good 6 speed DH rear mechs?

    Just use what you have.

Stip and put together with spacers. Set stop go ride.
