Renting a road bike?

Is it easy enough to rent a road bike where you are?
I have some American colleagues who are coming back over for a meeting in September. They are keen 'Roadies' and want to take a couple of extra days at the end of the trip to go cycling. The intention was to bring their own shoes, pedals, helmets and rent some reasonable road bikes.
I phoned round some LBS's but the only things on offer were Hybrids & Tandems. Is it worth me phoning more or do people just not rent out decent road bikes? I am in Plymouth BTW.
I guess the alternative is for them to bring their bikes with them. Anyone have any experience of taking bikes on planes? (They'll be coming from Florida).
Cheers
Darren

Google pops this up. Try road bike rental then nearest city?
Edit: just noticed you are in Plymouth. Guess that makes it trickier.
If they are American they'll think London's near enough!
Easiest way IMO.
If they don't rent them out, he'll know who does in the Plymouth area.
