Advice on new wheel set

I am look for advice about buying a new wheel set.
I want to upgrade from by stock wheels, currently riding a trek 2.1
Everywhere i read or people I speak to are advising to upgrade the wheels.
I have a budget of around £250- not a great deal but I hope enough.
The main use for bike is the Sunday ride and commute when not raining, so doing around 100+ per week. I use the training bike in wet weather.

So do you have any ideas?
