Chain device for Canyon

OK, I know this has been discussed before but it's a bit all over the place and Canyon are quite opaque about it.

I have a Nerve AM. The website states it is ISCG 05 standard. It is now widely known that it isn't, without an adaptor plate (see pic halfway down this thread viewtopic.php?f=10004&t=12806880).

Canyon will only comment that their own chainguide works. Their own chainguide is also show in the thread above. To add to the overall fogginess, Canyon's website says their own chain device is ISCG standard.

I haven't pulled the cranks off but I put a paper template scaled appropriately of the ISCG Old bolt pattern behind the cranks and it sure looks like ISCG Old.

I don't want to spend 42 for shipping on Canyon's guide when I can get a Blackspire Stinger for 21 from CRC. I guess I won't know for sure until I buy something (and no doubt it all goes wrong), but my supposition is that the Nerve AM has ISCG Old mounting tabs and the plate shown is simply an ISCG Old to ISCG 05 adaptor plate.

Anyone else with a Nerve AM able to confirm above?

The bolt pattern is neither iscg05 nor iscg old. It's their own pattern which is a bit off.

You could get an adapter plate which would make it iscg 05 compatible, but then you could have clearence problems as the plate is quite thick on it's own.

Or you can buy the original chainguide as it will fit directly to the original holes.

Or you can do as i did, as i am now running a bb mount blackspire stinger with a swapped wheel ( flat and wider) on a 24/36 front + bash. Running for a month now with no problems.

And to be honest i really don't see any downside to mounting the stinger on the bottom bracket.
  • As above.

Canyon's 'iscg' is their own measurement and is non-standard. so to run anything other than the Canyon chainguide, you need the adapter.

Actually you don't need the adapter. I have a bb mount stinger installed directly ( no adapters or anything)
  • I think (depending on the bike) that the pivot of the rear swingarm can/could get in the way. I know that the BB mount stinger won't work on my Torque.

I put a BB mounted bashguard on my AM9.0 as the mounts are not any standard at all, and Canyon don't even list the adaptor on their website.
  • you can get them if you ask, but IIRC they aren't cheap.

The adaptor is EUR10 (which is fine), but postage is ten quid

I really can't understand why they are advertising a non-ISCG Anything frame as "ISCG 05 standard"

called them twice asking the same question as you. Never got a reply

Leave it. Get a stinger with the BB mount and you're good to go.

Might just get a Bionicon instead

Just to add to this, some random browsing today found this

    http://translate.googleusercontent.com/ ... UE28utGRCg

obviously translated from German, but unless the translation is really really bad, it looks a lot like even Canyon's own chain guide requires the ISCG05 adaptor plate (and, apparently, 3 bolts)
  • You don't need an adapter for the Canyon guide...

I fitted mine back on the bike today and took a photo for you...

    temporary-52.jpg

    Mounts directly to the frame.

Thanks. Interesting that it doesnt sit flush with the bb shell facing.

Dont suppose you want to sell your iscg05 adaptor?
  • The spacing is odd on the Canyon.. I had to space out my crankset slightly to clear the chainstays... which is why I think they couldn't put the standard ISCG tabs on the frame.
I dont think the adapter will work with dual ring as it woudl fowl on the granny ring, hence why I had to shave off the granny ring tabs on my other crankset - i'm pretty sure the adapter is single ring specific (on the torque anyway).

£40 for a properly fitting chain guide isn't that bad tbh.
If you got a stinger + adapter its going to cost you £40 (which I don't think will work due to crankset clearence).

or get the BB mount stinger if you can make it work.

Sorry I still need my adapter :) (although I was lucky enough to have one come with my bike!).

So just buy the Canyon... Good advice really

I'm just annoyed a bike advertised as ISCG05 isn't really, but I guess I should just move on. Still a great bike after all
  • the Canyon device is a nice piece of kit in all fairness... and its made to measure!
