Hi all,

Ive been looking at a new bike for a while now. Started off by thinking the RR8.1 would be the optimum bike for me but then as Ive looked harder at it I've found my requirements creeping up and up and up. Radon bikes from Germany look good value but so does the basic Canyon Nerve XC for a full sus.

To add to this confusion, I've looked again at my work's cyclescheme. I could get the RR8.1 for about £350 if I went through cyclescheme which is unbelievable value. Its making me think whether I need a full sus at all, given that I can't really afford to buy a new bike and if I buy retail it would have to be on credit.

The cyclescheme has quite a range of shops in it, including evans and some LBS too. But I'm guessing I won't get anything near the spec and price of the RR8.1.

What would you do?

    Hi

I had the very same problem (if you can call it one). The cycle to work scheme is a good idea but I didn't like the idea of not owning the bike. There was no way I was getting a discount from the LBS in my area. So I did my research on the bikes I could afford with my budget £1000 +£100 and narrowed it down to a Giant Anthem X5, Specialised Camber Comp or a Nerve XC 6.0. For the money the Canyon sits between the Giant and the Specialised, and the spec of the Canyon is better INHO so after much deliberation (about 6 months) I bit the bullet and went for the Canyon. Bought it when the Euro dropped in value and got it for £1059 and got it last week and its currently sitting in my kitchen :D . Still need to sort the sag in the suspension but its great to ride, light and faster up the hills than my Spes P1 am hard tail. The build quality is good and sales support is good too.

Yeah the canyon nerve XC 6.0 looks great for the money. I wish I could just admit to myself that I can't afford it lol.

I'm going to get the RR8.1 on the cyclescheme. It will be better than my current RR5.2 and for £350 I can't get anything better. I'll wait for the 2012 models to come out in a month or so and continue to plan for a better bike 2 years down the line.

No offence, but if you cant really afford a bike now, and you want another in 2 years, why not just save for that time and buy something even better then?

Cos my bike now isn't good enough. Maybe the RR8.1 will be and i will be happy with it, if thats the case then I won't need another.
