Wide foot, high arch shoes?

Went for a bike fit and the fitter recommended getting some new shoes as he felt my Sidi`s were too narrow and my foot was hanging over the edge of the sole possibly causing a pain in the outside of my shin( he was not just saying this to try and sell me some shoes as he said the shoes he had would not suit me). Can someone recommend me a pair of wide fitting high arch shoes?

not sure about wide, but arch adjustment is with footbeds

the specialized bg footbeds come in three levels of arch support, there are other options, plus custom, whichever you choose they're likely to be ok with most shoes

really you need to find a shop where you can try a few, if you say whereabouts you are then someone may be able to recommend a place nearby

    Northwave.
What size you looking for ?
2012 Typhoon SBS are narrower than some older ones (Airlite SBS I think) that I'm thinking about keeping from CRC.
Also thought the 2012 shoes sole was more flexi (it was a composite rather than full carbon).

I've got Sidi's but in the mega size which is wider - and they are fantastic. My on bike comfort is considerably improved.

I've had minor knee problems my whole life and it's only in the last 2 years I started thinking about my feet. I did some stretching of them and some barefoot running and swapped all my shoes for wide ones. Now my knees feel great and my feet look totally different. My toes touch the ground now and they have really spread out.

My mum's feet look the same (probably worse actually) than mine used to - she blames genetics but really it's a lifetime of cramming her feet into stupid pointy shoes.

The only downside is that none of my old shoes fit now. New Balance running shoes are also my friend now.

The other brand I've been looking at is Bont - their shoes actually look the shape of a foot rather than pointy Italian loafers. Expensive though.
I'm left handed, if that matters.

I have really wide feet and find that Shimano shoes are best fitting for me.
  • I think I may be similar to you - I find Shimano, Spesh and Giro shoes are all too narrow for me. I have been using Lake's (CX 235C now discontinued) for the last three years and was pretty happy but they are worn out now and I can see I have been stretching the outside edge (overhanging the sole like it seems you describe) and have often had discomfort on the otuside edge of my foot. I measured myself following the Lake guide

    http://www.lakecycling.com/fitting-chart.html

    http://www.lakecycling.com/size-chart.html

I am 111x280 on left and 115x279 on right so I come up needing a wide fitting 44.5. I have always used 45s and tried a few standard width Laqke 45s on (excellent service from lbs Cestria Cycles Chester-Le-Street by the way :D ) and felt the 45 was right in lenght for me but a bit tight. They have ordered in some 45 Wide CX 236Cs for me and I am taking up my Green Spesh BG Footbeds to try them on tommorow. If you want I will post how they feel?

If you could post that would be great. This is starting to get confusing as the fitter said Northwave would be too narrow but Spesh are a wide fitting.

You hear all sorts about which brands are wider - and there are differences to a certain extent - but if you actually have wide feet you need proper wide shoes. The effort will be totally worth it. It's probably the most important part of your bike - and certainly the most important clothing part.

I struggled for years in regular shoes with the straps as loose as they would go - but there's nothing better than being on the middle of the adjustment range and being comfy.

  • Will try to post tomorrow night as should make it up to Cestria. Must say I have always heard of and found myself that Northwave and Lake are wider than most makes but will let you know how the 45W feel and you can measure yourself re Lake guide and hopefully can work out your size.

I do have wide feet and struggled with everything I've previously tried. NW are, IME the widest fitting shoes. I've found Specialized are also good but they seem narrower in the toe box.

Did you actually try any NW shoes in your LBS? My last 2 pairs have been Vertigo SBS' (Step-By-Step ratchet system) and they have proven to be extremely comfortable. I believe (please correct me if I'm wrong) that, the Vertigo model has now been deprecated and the Typhoon takes its place.

  • Got stuck at work so couldn't get up there - will post ASAP (hopefully tommorow).

I've got lake cx236 wide (size 42) that are higher volume & a very tiny bit wider than the Sidi mega (size 43) I had previously. I'm selling some Lake cx170 wide (size 43) if you're interested.

i had northwave sbs shoes as i have problem with the outer edge of my foot , they were perfect , my advice is put cleats on them cause i have now got a pair of giro trans which in the shop felt perfect but when i put the cleats on and tried in many positions they have given me my old problem back . the back of the cleat is exactly were my issue is on my right foot and with the soles been so thin i can really feel it , i could do with a heal lift in the back to take the preassure off if anyone knows were to buy one. dont let this put anyone off giro trans though and they do wider fit in the black.

northwave are wider there is no doubt.

wish i had got bont now ! :D
last month wilier gt -this month ? bh rc1
  • Picked up my 45 cx236c x - wide fit Lakes today and the fit is really good with the stock insoles. It's not bad with Spesh green BG footbeds but they do seem to push the heel up a bit and they are not so snug ( I find the green bgs too bulky anyway and think they arent right or me). Based on my experience the wide Lakes are spot on re the Lake measuring guide in m earlier post. Yet to try them on a ride but I know the feel of my std Lakes very well and the wide is better.

Hope this helps and re Bont -

:?:  :?: WTF? Never tried Bonts myself but this seems to contradict the posts here.
