My bike came with Avid Elixir R SL brakes and I had them on my bike for 2 years without any problems or complaints, best brakes I had used as before that my only experience of disks was some Hayes Stroker Ryde and Some Juicy 3s. I have since put some shiney new XT brakes on there to satisfy my upgraditis and they are a lot better. I only went for the XTs as I was upgrading the drivetrain to XT at the same time. Going to look out for some SLX brakes for my new hardtail as the Tektro Draco brakes it came with are crap, though I might give some thought to the Deore brakes now.

...Right, decided to wait (2 weeks) for the new SLX M675

Can get a set delivered for less than £115. Seems like a bargain.

So to answer the question "XT v SLX brakes which would you buy?"

...All depends on price. XT's when I could get them delivered for £125 but will settle for the 2013 SLX @ £113 :|

The rotors won't make any significant difference. Just clean what you have now with some alchohol, and use them.
  • Tried these...Deore (596), SLX (666) and XT (785) back to back a couple of weeks ago. All felt exactly the same.

SLX and XT have ice-tech so that you can go straight down the side of the Eiger without over-heating. Not sure about all this over heating malarky tbh. Never experienced it myself. Maybe ice-tech is something only a squillionth % of the population needs but it sure as hell sells brakes nonetheless - a bit like an iPhone 4S telling you that you need to pack an umbrella; useless stuff that piles on the sales.

Apart from the banjo fitting described earlier (if it is important to you) buy the cheapest and put the savings into your pension pot or more usefully in the short-term buy the GF/Wife a pressie.

I must be lucky with brakes then. Had juicy 3's, 5's and cr's on various bikes and all have been spot on.

just to clarify, i have no issues with the stopping power. it's the bleeding that seems to have no rhyme or reason to whether it's successful or not, despite following the instructions to the letter, it's the fact they needed to be bled. i probably averaged 2 / 3 attempts to get the lever to feel something like, i also got my best results when i went off piste an chucked the instructions! they then worked fine for 6 weeks, then the lever comes back to the bars. the reach adjustment was always fully out, it had to be even on a good bleed. the lever gets closer to the bars as the pads wear.

shimmanos fitted standard to my 07 trek ex7 never been bled, never had an issue.

xt's turned up, i needed to shorten the hoses, they bled up fine.

Can you not fit the finned rotors to the Deore?
Ice-tech is not just about finned rotors though, it's the entire design of the calliper being designed around thermal management - I'm sure most of the concept has gone into Deores as well.

Yeehaa, the Deore brakes will be able to use the aluminium core rotors, but not the finned pads as they're a different design. Current Deore pads are the same as previous generation SLX/XT

Ah. In that case I'm out.
I'm a hoooj fan of the XT brakes, but if the Deores aren't the same design, then there's no guarantee they'll perform as well.

On long brake dragging descent, no they'll over heat and fade quicker than any of the Ice Tech brakes. On shorter sharper braking sections, you'd struggle to notice the difference. Power and modulation felt the same to me
