how to remove a link from a chain?

how do you go about taking a link out of a chain? on my build the chain defo needs shortening but not really sure what i am meant to do? thank you

First off, buy a decent chain tool. I like this one: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=7843
You can buy cheaper, but the pins often bend. You can also buy a lot more expensive, but the above does a very good job.
Secondly, have a look on youtube, there's bound to be a video on there, or, have a look at the Park Tools website, it's very helpful. Traditionally, you use the chaintool to remove a link, then use it to re-join the chain, using a pin that you havent pushed completly out of the outer plate. If you pin has fallen right out, then you have a real struggle.
These days, you use a rejoinable master link. You need to think carefully before removing a link, are you removing at the innie or outy end. Master links join two innie ends.0
