Seatpost dropper - remote necessary?

I've finally decided to buy a dropper after 15 years of riding without one... As I'd like it to fit mt old O5 unfortunately it needs to be 27.2 which limits my choice. Is it worth buying one with a remote? Miss Notax thinks so, but never having used one of any type I'm not sure. If I can avoid the cable routing and make it easier to swap from bike to bike, so much the better. What are your experiences?

Keeps both your hands on the bars, you don't want to fiddling with your seat when it starts getting rough.

Remote. I'm often changing position when on rough ground and wouldn't be taking my hand off the bars to fiddle under the saddle.

Can you imagine going down the mega route and riding one handed while you adjust your saddle to the correct height for the oncoming drop, then popping it back up for the quick blast of a climb etc?

    My thoughts exactly :D

Sounds like the quickest route to A&E to me (and Notax needs no additional help in that respect!)

I hate to say i'm right Notax, but I am

The remote is a definite advantage that's worth getting, but they're still usable without.

All the posts i consider worth having only come with a remote anyway.

I have the ks950i dropper seat post, and I don't have the remote fitted. Does make things tricky at times though.

Having just got one without a remote, I can feel that I'm going to be in sitation when i wish I did have it. I'll likely upgrade in the future but it depends where you ride. trail centres for instance I imagine remote's aren't so necessary. Natural terrain more so because of the varied nature.

On a run like that my seat would be all the way down anyway. It would only come up for the climbs

    So you agree then. :)

End of the day, to answer the OP's question, no, a remote is not necessary. IMO it makes the whole dropper post thing seem useful, without I don't think it would be.

I was very sceptical before I bought my first dropper, thought they were a gimmick. How wrong was I.

You may try one without remote and like it, but i'm pretty dam sure if you then tried one with a remote, you wouldn't go back.

You may sneer, but they do exist.

/\ /\ On one of the trails last week, was a long climb and then there was the odd big step or 2 to get up mid climb. It really helped to tweak the seat down a touch for getting up the steps, then back up to full height for the rest of the climb without stopping.
It's not all about going down..

    ^^This^^

I bailed twice reaching under the saddle to raise/lower the seatpost.. I then upgraded to the remote, best improvement ever.

It wasnt at coed y brenin yesterday.... Some good descents (on the mbr) but some good climbs too. Well, I say good as they were rewarded with good descents.

Still trying to find the trail which is like this escher-stair.jpg

The Marin trail in Betws y coed is kind of like that Escher sketch. Climb forever and a day, and no rewarding descent at the top.
