Kind of spoilt today's ride as half way round the (lh) crank arm fell off. Found the bolt that keeps it in place but appear to have lost what surrounds this and holds in place, possibly crank arm cover too but I can't recall whether there was one there in the first place.

Can anyone tell me what I need to purchase to fix this and what tools I need to ensure a good job.

Thanks

edit: not a two piece. take the other bolt out and see if you have lost anything as you may not have.

Here is a picture, with the part that I am sure is missing indicated by the arrow.

Yeah you've lost the screw that holds the inner self extracting screw in. You need it so that when you undo the inner one, it doesn't just pull that out and pulls the crank arm off instead.

powerspline never had self extracting bolts.

you will have just lost the bit of plastic.

do as i said above take the other bolt out and compare.

    I think it's just a dust cover.
    Need to check bolts regularly.

Is there a name of the plastic bit lost and can I buy a replacement?

have you identified what you have actually lost?

pop into your LBS or just ride your bike.

I have tightened up the bolt holding the crank arm in place but there is too much play in the arm now, wondering whether the part missing does a specific job and not just as dust cover. There is a thread inside the BB that I am sure has a purpose.

    then your arm is dead.

have you looked at the other side yet?

    it will answer your questions.

yes, on the other side there is the same bolt holding it in place and a black o-ring around it, no dust cover as such. On the image above where the arrow is is where this o-ring sits

so as i have said it is a dust cover and you need new cranks.

Can I buy singularly, does it have to be the same as comes off. Has I damaged a thread and that is why there is the play? I still need the dust cover, would that be purchased separately to the crank? Thanks for the advice, I will be more careful in future with this and check more regularly.

I take it there isn't a common size, or will any Truvativ fitting suffice? Sorry for the ignorance, I am pretty new to this!

It is power spline and that is only truvative fitting. But truvative use other fittings as well.

Pop into your lbs and ask.

If they are anything like us they will have a few in bins somewhere.
