Hey there..

I am quite new in this sport and i want to buy some good 3/4 bibs and i asked arround and everyone told me to get rapha or assos. Now after some reading many people say they are overpriced and you can get the same gear for less money. So what would you guys recomment in these matters?

I am a bit confused after all this talking rapha is the best but then you read they are so overpriced..

Thanx.

Don't get Assos confused with Rapha, Rapha are overpriced rubbish but Assos is just worth it imo. But of course you can get cheaper. Love my Assos 3/4s ....

    Not confused,
IMO Assos and Demarchi are over priced, i always wore both brands of bib shorts but due to changes in my cash flow i tried the cheaper Santini Slice bib shorts and the material it as good as Assos and loads better than the Demarchi.

Do you only come on to the forum to spout anti-Rapha bile? It's like playing forum bingo - as soon as someone mentions Rapha just wait for giant man to come on and start slating them! Can you tell us about your winter gloves please - you haven't mentioned those for a couple of weeks…...

For what it's worth, Rapha may well be over-priced and at times embarrassingly marketed, but the few items I own perform superbly and are most definitely not rubbish.

To the OP - not a frequent wearer of 3/4's as I prefer knee warmers, but the best made and most comfortable I owned were Castelli, which can often be found cheaper than some of the brands already mentioned and have a very good pad (Kiss) fitted.

I'd go with shorts and knee warmers, I have bib knicks, but if I was buying over again I wouldn't bother.

What I like about both Assos and Rapha are their comprehensive warranty and repair services. Expensive, yes, comfortable, yes, repairable, yes. I have no idea about the other makes mentioned warranty services.

Yes indeed, makes me chuckle every time  To be fair, on the specific issue of the winter gloves I actually agree with you!

Well there you go then. So how can I recommend a certain brand of garment to someone if my own experience was bad? All I do is speak as I find.

I have a pair of Assos 3/4's great for winter commuting, had them for about 3 years now. Fell off a twice in the ice this year, ripped both hips and knees. Sent them back to Assos, they cut the holes out, sewed replacement material in and they're as good as new. Didn't cost anything more than the postage out to them. Was going to bin them! Just look for some in sales. www.royles.biz had some of the old Assos stuff reduced, but now only have the new range. Good time to find winter gear reduced.... well it would be if it warmed up!

I have the Assos TK434 knicks and very impressed.
Not had much Rapha but I do prefer the Assos stuff I've had to the Rapha.
And if your starting out then Santini is very good for the money, well above average.
Then when your more sure about what you like and need you can buy some Assos knicks
Seriously though Santini is good stuff.

Castelli Sorpasso 3/4 - I've had Assos but these are way better. Buy direct from Italy for 25% less than rip-off UK prices.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

as mentioned above, why not normal bib shorts and some kneewarmers?

    shorts are good year round...

for winter it's tights, unpadded, over shorts

    next is legwarmers, plus shorts

    then kneewarmers, plus shorts

and for the two weeks of uk summer, shorts
my bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny

I always thought it was magic....

but then it was pointed out to me that it might be the grippers on the tops and bottoms and the shorts being over the top ;)

I live in iceland and the weather here is very rocky... You can have a good weather but after ten minutes you will be having totally different weather. So i think 3/4 are maby the best all arround option.

You could try this. had these for 5 hour + rides and comfy. Can't go wrong for your money but that's just my personal experience

I have DHB 3/4 and Rapha 3/4's. The Rapha are worth the extra. Why?

Well considering bibs are meant to be worn next to the skin I find it very annoying when they stitch labels inside on most bibs. Cutting off leaves a jagged bit of plastic to irritate which means unpicking the seam and then restitching. Had to do this on both DHB and Castelli bibs. Rapha have no inside labels and are more comfy to boot.

I've never noticed any labels ? How low down are they ? Maybe my under vest covers them ?

My DHB's had a big label right at the base of the spine on the inside

Hate to say it about the DHB's but I've noticed the same issue with the standard Pace bibs. Great otherwise.

The Robaix don't suffer from it. Sadly they're just a little too hot for all year round riding but pretty much perfect otherwise.
