Afternoon all:-) Im off on holiday in sept and will be takin my own bike with me this time and would like some kind of insurance for but im not sure if such a thing exists.

I have normal travel insurance for all the usual stuff but it doesnt cover my bike so id like to have it covered for any losses or damage at the airports and while im away.

How have you all covered your bikes on your travels??

I've got the same issue, off to the Alps in a few weeks. My normal bike insurance (insured with a specialist policy) doesn't cover the bike when it's been checked in only when it's with me. I can't find anything that'll cover it for anything like the value it's worth when in the possession of the airline.

It is a concern as you say, odds are it will be ok but id like some sort of cover for my own piece of mind if nothin else.

Whereabouts are you goin in the alps out of curiosity, im off to the austrian alps myself and im hugely excited. I rented a bike last yr which was ok but it wasnt properly setup for likin and in europe like the states the brakes are back to front which led to some err...exciting moments a couple of times lol.

I'm off to Les Arcs, 5 of us going and I'm worried a bag will go missing or get damaged. Think I'm just going to pack it really well and hope for the best. Loads of people seem to do it without issue, just hope I'm one of them.

Taking your own bike has to be better though, you know how it feels and I'd have thought you'd get more out of the riding as a result. I can't wait! Making a shopping list and building up spares!

There are dedicated insurances or standard travel insurances. Check the small print though on what they actually cover and especially how much they'll pay out for an individual item.

Loss on the plane should really be covered by the airline. They lose or wreck it, they pay up or you sue them.

Though you may find home insurance has some cover under away from home insurance. Check what the cover is though, the individual limit and what it says about overseas and when being transported.

Other thing is whether you want insurance for if you damage it while riding, i.e. crash!

Check that it covers actually mountain biking and if you want to do any events, do they cover that (often they don't). Though travel insurance with this kind of cover is typically going to cover medical costs too.

Oh and if you are likely to travel a couple of times or more in the year, go for annual insurance. Typically better value and chucks in extra cover (e.g. like winter sports).

Thanks for your input deadkenny, its not so much crash damage insurance im after more some kind of coverage from loss, damage or theft etc while im away.

It sounds like i'll have to have word with my home insurance company and see what they have to say.

It is exciting as you say :mrgreen: been gettin my bits and bobs sorted out and fitted, got new x9 shifters to compliment the rear mech, and fitted full length cables to keep it all runnin smoothly. Im still toyin with the idea of getting some new brakes for her, the current avids are ok but i think i'd like abit more than they offer so maybe new slx if i can spare the readies.
