Tiagra Triple - How Low Can I Go?

I'm not a great climber as my recent slow progress around the Etape du Dales demonstrated. I need some easier gears. I have a Tiagra triple with a 30t chainring and a 12-25 cassette. I could use a 12-27 but this wouldn't make much of a difference. I've seen an 11-32 cassette but am I right in thinking my standard dérailleur would not cope? Would I need a new one to manage the 32t?

What mech do you havew now. With that kind of gear range you would need a long cage most probably.

I have a Tiagra RD-4500GS, which I think is a for a standard triple set-up. When I installed the dérailleur I seem to remember the Shimano instructions said 27t was the largest allowed sprocket. Is this the absolute limit or could it really cope with a 32?

Yes 27 is the max recommended by shimano but I run 11-28 on my triple tiagra (30/39/50) on the front. It's the previous series -4400 but I don't think that will make any difference. I think 32 would be pushing it a bit far.

You could fit one of these inner rings. Go for 26 or 28.
