Canyon AM rubbing somewhere

Howdy.

I just got back from the first ride on my canyon am 9.0 and loved it. There was a wierd rubbing noise that I only heard when the suspension was near full compression. It sounded like something had got stuck in the wheel and was ratttling the spokes, but there wasn't anything there.

It did it every time I jumped or dropped, was quite loud, and I started to think maybe the tyre was rubbing on one of the cables but after looking closely I don't think it's possible.

Any suggestions to what it might be are welcome.

Cheers.

Empty the shock of air, cycle the rear through its travel and see if anything is catching/rubbing somewhere.

Edit: was the Reverb up or down at the time too?

Check it's not the reverb hose on the back wheel. I nailed a cable on a previous dropper as it rubbed the tyre at full compression. Took me too long to figure out the weird noise when landing jumps!

Cheers for the replies. I don't think it's the reverb cable, I routed it over the top tube and around the seat tube cos it caught on the rocker arm. Still worth checking though I suppose, it was down at the time.

Good idea about deflating the shock, I'll try that tomorrow.

Fellow AM 9.0 owner here. Mine makes the same noise too! Was sure I had a loose spoke to start with but all seems ok. Then I thought a loose disc but they are fine too. I think it may be the reverb hose on the swingarm as they do rub a bit when the saddle is low and suspension compressed. If you figure it out please do let me know!

Well I think I've solved it. Good advice from warpcow lead me to deflate the shock. With the seat all the way down and the shock fully compressed the cable fouls on the rear tyre. Not sure if it would have lead to any damage but the sound would have been irritating.

Hopefully it's sorted now. I had to coil the reverb cable around the seatpost to take up the slack, ,it doesn't look like it'll be a problem again.

Snowrider, I'd check this yourself. I had to route the reverb cable in a funny way as I'm too lazy and ham fisted to shorten the cable and make a proper job of it. It's a bit awkward all round really as you need the slack in the cable to allow for full extension.

Anyhow I hope I've fixed it, I'll find out later. Thanks for all the good advice.

I have shortened my Reverb hose so it cannot hit back tyre so its not that. I was out on the bike again today and I had the forks pumped up a bit harder and I got the noise much less often. Still sounds like the rotor to me. I'm guessing maybe there is enough flex in the forks that when they compress a lot they twist the big 200mm rotor enough that it rubs on the caliper.

Not sure about that one mate, the fork seems pretty stiff to me. Since dealing with the cable problem I haven't heard a peep from the bike. It's a bit eerie to be honest, I'm used to a shorter travel kona rattling and pinging it's way through the rough stuff but the canyon barely makes a sound.

Have you tested it with the shock fully deflated? I was surprised to see how far everything moved when fully compressed. Also it has an amazing knack for picking up mud around the front deralier. Not sure if there's anything that can be done about that, besides moving to Spain.
  • You get the noise when the bike's suspension compresses?
    A grinding/buzzing noise?
Are you pedalling when it happens? If yes to all the above its probably chain growth.

I get a kind of light buzz/grind noise from my AM's gears if i'm cranking the pedals through a dip and the suspension compress's hard.
