what caged SPD?

Aye up all,
I've just really started to get into 'clipped in'. I've had pedals and shoes for years but found I've not felt particularly supported by them so they've sat under the bed whilst I've ridden flats. Now the Moment is built as an xc/trail bike I'm running my spds again (none caged) to increase my stamina. I've only recently discovered that caged pedals offered you more stability - I'd previously thought that being clipped in meant the cage was a redundant feature but I'm feeling very 'perched' or like I'm in a balancing act on my current ones.
I've just read the M530review and thought this could be the pedal to try, great price. But the review and the user reviews beneath suggest the cage doesn't add a great deal of support... so... can you recommend me a few others to look into?
Cheers guys

I've never been a fan of cages but I do like the look of the trail pedals. I'm still not convinced how much support that cage will give you, other than deflecting rock strikes from the actual pedal mechanism.
I don't recommend M424's with the plastic cage, they're very flimsy and only survived a couple of rock strikes. There is a metal caged version, but I just didn't get on with the former so never tried them.
Perfectly happy with M520's though!0 -
I don't know my model for certain but it looks very similar to the M520. On occasion, I can't clip in fast enough or on very rocky descents feel like I need greater area to stand on. I ride lots of gnar so, I'm hoping there is a clipped pedal that doesn't weight + cost a fortune that supports your weight more than at the mechanism...0

Yeah the cage did make clipping in a bit easier. How tight do you have the tension set? I'd definitely be looking at the trail pedals then. http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=67249 The other caged spd pedals are really heavy. ( http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... odelID=771 )
I've seen these http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... delID=4739 being talked about before but I am a fan of shimano's design. Might be worth looking at.0 -
I think the tension is about right. I can wrentch my foot out in blind panick when I inevitable go over the bars, but they don't release when I'm powering up hills. I just feel like I'm balancing on matchsticks when doing the technical stuff. That chain reaction price is damn good. But I'm still not certain if there is enough cage to feel like I'm standing on something more substantial... The removeable cage of the other Shimano you suggested is interesting but I don't think I'd need it. And the Time pedal could be good too - I'd need new cleats though I think (Shimano and Time aren't compatible are they?)
I'm leaning toward the M530 as it's so cheap0 -
also just found a pair of M530 brand new for 23 posted. Bargain-tastic Think I'll give them a try and hope they offer enough support.0

They'll give a bit more support than the M520's and that's a great price for them! Cleats come with the pedals so it wouldn't have mattered what brand you went for.0

That is a bargain! I use Shimano M647 (the resin caged ones) on my downhill bike, and some cheapo metal caged ones on the XC bike. Going to be upgrading to the XTR trail pedals at some point though, the cheap ones will do for now!0
