Another what pedals

Okay, I've just bought a racer with drop handlebars and stuff like that. It is secondhand and it came with shimano M520 pedals. But no shoes. I thought easy, I'll just buy some shoes. But it has dawned on me that it is the pedals that come with cleats not the shoes. So I need to get some cleats which will cost me £20. So then I thought well I could maybe get a brand new set of pedals and cleats for not much more. Then I started reading about floating cleats and those without and how bad it could be for your knees if you chose the wrong type. At this point I thought maybe I should think about getting pedal / cleat sets with a variable amount of float. I've heard that too little float can hurt the knees and too much float can make it diificult to unclip. So, any suggestions please for a good - but not expensive - pedal. The bike, which was secondhand, has a light frame and shimano 105 stuff. I am very pleased with it and I am hoping that when it stops raining I will use it lots. However I am not a racer so that's why I am posting in this forum.

In the UK you can get spd cleats for about £5 off ebay. New set of M520s with cleats about £20-£22.
SPDs have plenty of float. The different models refer to the release modes.
I have multi release (56) and single release (51,52?) and can't notice the difference in road use.
Cheapest route is to just buy the cleats to suit your pedals but check because few road shoes can take spd cleats, whereas almost all mtb shoes will.

The different levels of float in different types of cleat come with road pedals more than mountain bike ones -- the standard SPD cleats have plenty of float already. As for good, not expensive pedals, the M520s are the best around. Grab some cleats for five quid or so, and a pair of matching shoes, and you're good to go.

I'll 3rd Shimano M520 for a good value intro to clipless pedals. Unless you buy them super cheap from ebay they should come with cleats.
