Am I right in thinking you can't mix Shimano rear derailleurs with SRAM shifters?

dont know for definite, but apparently the ratios at which the shifter moves wont match the pivot action of the mechs, so in proper shifts occur.

This is what i have been told

You can use SRAM named shifters.

All covered in the FAQs above.

I'm using a SRAM rocket (similar to the older wrap round indicator X7 which is what I have for the front shifter) with an XT rear mech just fine and the wife has a SRAM MRX gripshift with LX rear mech, but as Nick says the Xx (where x is a number) won't work.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
