Student Road bike

I have recently attended university and my old mountain bike is a little small for me now and hence I am looking for a new bike.
Ideally I am looking for a road bike or a hybrid and not a pure mountain bike (I can still use my old bike for that)
However there are some requirement.
1) Budget is £300
2) I am not experienced in road bikes so a super light one isn't going to make much of a difference
The third requirement is that since I am a student - the bike is my only method of transport and hence it gets locked up outside places alot. Usually I can find a fixed bracket and use a D-lock through the front wheel but sometimes there aren't these facilities and I have to just lock the back wheel to the frame.
So the question is - is there a bike that people would advise
I've been doing some research and the Decathlon Triban 3 seems like a winner which is seriously nice - or the other option is to go on ebay e.t.c and try and pick up an older racing bike that is still the same spec but isn't as attractive to thieves.
Any opinions welcome.
Thanks

if that was me i'd go down the ebay route and try and get a little cheap one - the tieves are probably on the lookout for newbs on new bikes. The dissenter is every human being at those moments of his life when he resigns

Fair enough. Are there any particular areas to look down (searching for historic road bike gets quite a few hits)
Also I just found this.

the mudguards and rack mount could come in handy.0 -
You can't buy better than this £280 hybrid from Halfords. Year's guarantee. Cheap parts that are cheap to replace and easy to repair. Plus there's a Halfords round every corner. Buying secondhand from ebay can be a pain - and with few guarantees.

If you buy anything half decent then make sure you get a good lock and insure it because it will get nicked...
I keep my bike in my room at uni.. and have a separate 'bad' bike for town riding.0
